College of Social and Behavioral Sciences
Welcome to the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences (CSBS), home to more than a dozen major and minor programs, and absolutely central to the undergraduate experience! Our Mission Statement summarizes what we do: A diverse community of learners committed to innovation and excellence in scientific inquiry, international education, student engagement, community outreach, social justice, and well-being. We open doors to the world of ideas and opportunities, guide students as they convert theory into practice, and serve as a vibrant regional resource in the social and behavioral sciences.
Housed primarily in White Hall on East Campus, our college is comprised of five dynamic departments, i.e., Family and Consumer Sciences, Political Science and Global Studies, Psychology, Sociology and Geography, and Social Work, the latter a nationally accredited and state-designated “program of distinction.” These five departments offer an abundance of focus areas such as Criminology, Legal Studies, Anthropology, Geography, Global Studies, Aging Studies, Nutrition, and Consumer Economics. Together we provide high quality undergraduate education in the liberal arts and professional programs while also linking into Shepherd’s graduate programs. The graduate program in College Student Development and Administration has a home in the Department of Psychology and provides excellent preparation for careers in areas of student affairs. We also offer credit-bearing courses in Model United Nations and Debate and Forensics, both in Political Science, and Sign Language, the latter housed in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
Our programs emphasize student engagement and high-impact practices aimed at preparing you for the work world as, for example, internships in political science, service projects in sociology, field experiences in social work, faculty-led research in psychology, study tours to Europe and Asia, and teamwork in the Model UN and Debate and Forensics competitions. Check out RamPulse for info on our student clubs and organizations. Our faculty takes pride in teaching excellence and personalized one-on-one advising and mentoring. No teaching assistants, but fully qualified professors to guide you into meaningful careers, from law to teaching, counseling, social work, and government service. And for our alums, “welcome back.” Shepherd will always be your home!
